I’ve always been a big fan of comic books. The obsession started real young, when my friends and I would pretend we were superheroes – dressing up in colorful costumes, imagining we had superhuman powers.
As an adult, I now have a lot of fun reliving my childhood each time a new superhero movie comes out. This summer, that movie is Marvel’s “The Avengers” — “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” The first time, we’ve ever had multiple big league superheroes together in one movie!
When I read comic books, the team-ups among superheroes were always the most exciting! Often, some weird misunderstanding would put the heroes at odds with one another, but then they would unite against a common threat – like an alien invasion, team of super villains or cosmic entity! Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would only come together when it took such super-collaboration to do the impossible!
The G8 is kind of like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the real world… or so we’d like to think.
These leaders, the presidents and prime ministers of the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the U.K., have been given special powers through the votes and confidence of the world’s most developed countries and economies. We look to them to help lead us and guide us. And once a year, they gather together and coordinate with one another.
We have a lot of villains in the world: unemployment, rising fuel prices, conflicts, and economic uncertainties. These issues affect our lives, but they have an even larger impact on those living in extreme poverty, the 925 million living in hunger and the nearly 3 million children who die from hunger-related causes every year.
HungerFree is a global movement to end hunger – to ask our leaders to show global leadership by joining together to coordinate achievable and sustainable solutions that includes nutritious, affordable, and locally grown food for those living with hunger.
It seems impossible – but if we each do our part, we truly could live in a hunger free world. But it starts with us, we have to show our leaders this is important to us. Learn more at hungerfree.org and add your support.
