There are most likely people living in our own community who we have never engaged with before. Israeli and Palestinian youth who may live just down the street from each other rarely have the chance to interact with one another due to political and cultural complications. (more…)

World Aids Day is this Saturday… and maybe you forgot.

It’s okay. There is a lot going on in the world and many other issues pine for our attention and time. We don’t often hear about HIV/AIDS very much. It’s one of those things that has taken a back seat to other more popular social issues that are out there. But it’s still a disease that is affecting millions every year. In fact it’s on the rise again in Uganda... a place that was the poster child for HIV reduction. It still deserves our attention, so this Saturday let’s remember those that are in the fight against this disease.

Act Against Modern-Day Slavery: Anti-Trafficking Advocacy Update

posted by September 25th, 2012

Saturday marked the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation

…and we celebrated by calling on today’s leaders to embrace the spirit of Lincoln to tackle modern-day slavery.

Today, regardless of anyone’s political stripes and colors, we commend President Obama for giving the first-ever presidential address on human trafficking [see video here]. In it, he declared, “Our fight against human trafficking is one of the great human rights causes of our time, and the United States will continue to lead it…”

World Vision Reaction to President Obama’s Human Trafficking Speech

We applaud the President’s bold vision and commitment to ending human trafficking.

From increased support for survivors to partnerships with the private sector to open up supply chains to ending the Federal Government’s unintentional but influential role in this affront to human dignity – President Obama has laid out a challenge that we will take up and hold him accountable to.  These initiatives have the potential to get at the root of some of the most heinous and deceptive practices in the labor market for government contractors and subcontractors.   Further, it should ensure that Federal employees know they have a direct role to play in ending modern day slavery.

The question is how will the rubber meet the road?  If the President is reelected, how will his Administration ensure he lives up to the bold vision he has laid out here?  We look forward to working with his Administration to help answer these questions and ensure his bold vision is executed.
